The Nurse
Through all this time – I have never complained,
Look after her like your own child, they said to me.
And as I watch her
leave for the last time,
I beg heaven
for as much luck as possible,
now her life begins anew.

See now, she loves – see now, she lives,
and in an instant  - she has left childhood.
She’ll leave me soon, her nurse, her rock.
We are not related,
But it was with me she sought security.

But she is not mine alone,
When she is called “my child” –
Then I think she is mine
which only confuses things.
Does her Mother begrudge
her own child some good luck?

And I just stand here,
watching her and seeing clearly,
I would give my life for Julia.
I love her so unreservedly.
